History of the Institute
The Institute of Classical Studies is a national and international research Institute in the languages, literature, history, art, archaeology and philosophy of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. It is a member Institute of the University of London's School of Advanced Study which combines the advantages of a graduate school with those of a centre for postdoctoral research and scholarship in many aspects of the Humanities.
The Institute, in association with the Hellenic and Roman Societies, provides an internationally renowned research library available to scholars from universities throughout the world. The Institute plays a leading role in the training of graduate students and is the social and academic centre for postgraduates both from the University of London and from other universities. It is in addition the meeting place of the main Classics organisations in the United Kingdom.
The Institute was founded in 1953 by the Senate of the University of London as a partnership between the University and the Hellenic and Roman Societies. In 1958 the Institute and Societies moved from their headquarters at 50 Bedford Square to new purpose-built accommodation provided by the University at 31-34 Gordon Square, an address which for nearly 40 years was regarded throughout the Classical world as the national headquarters of the profession.
In August 1997 the Institute and Societies moved again, to new premises in Senate House. Senate House is a Grade II* listed building dating from the nineteen thirties. The building, completed in 1937, was regarded by its architect, Charles Holden, as his finest work.
The Library has two reading rooms, one on the third floor, overlooking the British Museum, and another, containing the archaeology, art, and epigraphy collections, in the basement which is reached by direct lift from within the library. Associate fellows and visiting fellows are provided with research rooms within the library. Also on the third floor are the adminstrative offices of the Hellenic and Roman Societies, the British School at Athens, the Joint Association of Classical Teachers, and the Classical Association.
Details of the Institute's own academic programme and special events organised by the Learned Socieities and other bodies are available on this website.
